Jacob had ran out to go find his friend, Damon, but with his poor sense of direction he got lost in the streets of Gatlin. Being a male he wouldn't ask for directions to the girls communal home either. He stopped, looked around and then swore to himself, "What the duce!"

John Peters had also been along the road. His goal was also to find the girls communal home. He was also lost. And he also refused to ask for directions.
He was still scratching his head and trying to figure out where he had got turned around on himself when he heard Jacob. He sighed and called lazily to the other boy. 'You shouldn't say things like that, dumbass. It's not polite."

Jacob let out a heavy groan. It was his worst enemy. It was the pinnacle of his being. It was John peters. "Yeah well, someone like you doesn't need much respect dumb ass."

John snorted. "Hey, I do. You name it, I do it, so I deserve respect, alright? I'm the reason you're not starvitating," he added, butchering the word 'starving'. "But, if you choose not to respect me, then have respect for everyone else. What if some lady was here? You're going to say things like that?"

"If it was a true child of He Who Walks Behind the Rows, I would give her some respect. But you are nothing but a lazy ass who sits around doing nothing, but says he does everything, then keeps all the lords boys from sleeping at night, so they can't function properly in the morning either!" Jacob then tried to walk away from the conversation in another attempt to find the girls' communal home.

"I don't keep anyone from sleeping at night!" John argued, knowing that Jacob would never accept the truth of how hard he worked for Gatlin. "You guys just blame it on me. If you want to sleep at night, go outside and get some exercise. If you exercise, you'll be able to sleep. But you all just sit around all day doing nothing so," he shrugged as if to say 'and that's all there is to it'.
"And where are you going, anyway?"

Still trying to walk away, "I'm going to the girls' Communal home, not that it's any of your business you stinky kaniggit."

John rolled his eyes. "That's not even a word." He made a noise that sounded something like a dying dolphin in a poorly planned attempt to mock the other boy. "And why are you going there?" he started to follow him on the off-chance Jacob knew where he was going. "How long you going to be there?"

"Well first of all-- what's with the strange dolphin thing. I mean how many people have a phobia of dolphins-- especially in the middle of Nebraska. Second of all, why do you care why I'm going there of for how long, it's no of your business as far as I'm concerned." Jacob was very unhappy that John Peters was following him, and also wondered why, since the two of them didn't like each other-- like at all.

John Peters sighed as though Jacob had done the most annoying thing in the world. "Why can't you just answer the question? It's simple. I just wanted to know. A normal person would have said 'I'm going to be there for about an hour' or some measurement of time. But no, you have to make things difficult." Once again he sighed, but, he decided to take the high road and answer Jacob's question to prove how normal people did it. "And I care because--" I want to be alone to try and 'woo' my future wife...but also because I can't even get there, so I'll get lost on the way back unless I have a guide... "because I do."

"Well fine, if you must know, I'm going to see my friend Damon-- and probably his wife. And before you say something arrogant, like you always do-- I'm not spying on the girls, I am going to the right place, and it's really none of your concern-- So," Jacob slowd down his speech to make it easier for John to understand, "If you would kindly-- just butt out!"

John Peters had been trying to be polite. Why was Jacob flying at him for no reason? "You know what your problem is?" he asked. "You just can't let things go. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings like, two hundred years ago. Sorry when I was five I didn't share my cookie with you." He rolled his eyes. The only possible reason that Jacob could be angry with him is over something he had done a long time ago. Because ever since the Purging he had been the perfect role model.

Solomon had been leaving the Empty Schoolhouse. The old, tattered building's entrance entered out onto the street, and he had just been making his way to either the fields to check on some crops that had been worrying him or to the Boy's Communal Home for an early rest when the large gargantuan of a boy found the infamous John Peters and Jacob arguing with each other.
"Stop fighting," he said simply. Everyone was fighting today. First Isaac and Malachai, then Zipporah and Rhett, now John and Jacob. Why could no one act peaceably with one another?

John started a little at Solomon's sudden appearance, but as soon as he heard the other boy's words he nodded vigorously in agreement. "I agree!" he chirped. "We should just get along. I want to get along!" To prove this, he tried to smack Jacob playfully in the back. "It's just that this dark cloud of hate here naturally dislikes me!" Eager to sway the newfound argument to his side he began to elaborate. "So, I come and I ask him a simple question: how long does he think he'll be at the Girl's Communal Home, because, you know, I want to make conversation. And what does he do?" he challenged, raising his voice to a yell. Which was very loud, because John Peters was always yelling and him trying to yell nearly broke the sound barrier. "He asks me 'why do you make dolphin noises'? Which I don't. He's just crazy!"

Solomon nodded as John spoke to show him that he was listening. However, he saw through some of the half-truths of John's words. Well, one half-truth. "You do make dolphin noises," Solomon pointed out fairly. "You might not know that you do, but you do. It was rude for you, Jacob, to ask him about it instead of answering his question."
