Isaac shifted uncomfortably at Deborah's obvious idolization of him. It was apparent from her round eyes and tied tongue that she held him in very high esteem. This was all wonderful, and certainly nothing for her to be ashamed of as he was the giver of the Lord's word. But He Who Walks behind the Rows was very jealous, and furthermore it was inappropriate if her worship of Isaac surpassed that for her God.
But these thoughts were shoved to the side when Deborah fumbled together some convoluted story. Isaac quirked an eyebrow and tried to piece it together. He wasn't entirely certain what Deborah meant by the part where Ruth was almost eaten by the corn, but he did figure out this: Deborah had struck Ruth with a stone and knocked her unconscious.
"How could you be so foolish?" he growled, but stopped himself from going forward. He could scold Deborah later. "Where is she?"

Deborah whimpered at Issac's reaction. He seemed so angry! Why couldn't she have ran into Feng instead with this boo boo? Then she wouldn't have upset Issac in their first alone conversation. She sniffed loudly as she was about to shed tears again. She turned and pointed where she came from. "...Ums...thataway I thinks? By the edge of the cornfield..."

Isaac followed Deborah's vague gesture. He made a split-second decision. "I will go seek out Ruth and try to give her comfort. You go and try to collect some other children to assist me in the event that Ruth needs to be moved." He wasn't going to say it out loud, but there was no way he had the strength alone to pick up the eight-year-old girl.

Deborah put her serious face on and nodded. "Right!" She nodded again in agreement with herself. "I'll grabs as many as I can!" Without waiting she ran off into the cornfield without any direction in mind. She had to find children to help move Ruth. Issac trusted her with that.
