Being told to stop crying just made Deborah cry even harder. "WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!! I-I-I-I-I...uh WAAAAAAAAH! I wasn't lying! David even saids the dragon was going to eats me!" She screamed as she started to kick her tiny five year old legs off the ground.

And --- and now there was a five-year-old crying. The day, it just got better and better, didn't it?
Still, the Lord did so favor innocence, and Deborah was the very image of that as she fretted over being eaten by Jacob's bell-summoned dragon as told by David. "Calm yourself, Deborah," Isaac said gently, attempting to placate her. He moved to rest a hand on her shoulder. "It is David who must concern himself with the king of hell if he truly told this lie to you. Jacob's bell does not summon dragons," he hated himself for even speaking the absurdity aloud. "I have heard its jingle innumerable times and never has one dared to threaten this place. And if it does summon one, then the Lord will take care for his favored and the others must accept his judgment." Finished with his speech, he finally allowed himself to turn his head slightly to the enraged Zipporah. His eyes narrowed. "A woman's loving nature towards the children is one of her most exalted traits."

So Jacob felt like he had done nothing but go back and forth all day, probably because he hadn't. But he figured he might as well go to the cornfield and see how that all went, getting lost on the way of course. Through all the huge stalks, it all looked the same to Jacob, and it all looked blurry. "I really wish I could have a pair of glasses," he mumbled to himself as he blundered into the clearing. He looked around, saw Deborah talking to Isaac, then a huge fake smile came to his face. "Hey--"

Ruth turned her head to return the greeting. But the words caught in her throat, and with a feral hiss and took a step backwards. It was him. "It's---" was all she was able to say before she once again, as she had when Malachai had been throwing his weight around, attempted to hook herself around Isaac's legs as though that would offer her any sort of protection. "D-don't do anything rash," she advised when she got hold of her tongue. "Think this all through logically, Jacob." Maybe he could be talked down from summoning his dragon to kill everyone. She jerked against the edge of Isaac's coat, urging him to take her lead. He was a much better speaker than she was, after all. Surely he could make Jacob remove his bell-from-hell and save everyone's life.
But it was truly in the hands of the Lord.

It would be a lie to say that Zipporah did not hear Isaac's barb. It would be a lie to say that the words did not trouble her immensely, that she did not pick them up off the floor and hide them in her back pocket to examine later to see how much favorable ground she had lost on the boy preacher. But it would also be a lie to say that she took them to heart. The only thing troubling was that he had said them. Her favor with Isaac had to be high. Malachai had high favor. It had stayed high until he had foolishly tossed it away for love and had tried to lift his dagger against Isaac.
The latter had to be done carefully if it was to be done at all.
But she didn't allow any of these thoughts to show on her expression. Still, she was relieved when Jacob, the source of all the confusion, entered the clearing. She wouldn't have to deal with the young child any longer. "Speak to the child," she ordered, gesturing towards Deborah. Then she nodded towards Ruth, because the other little girl had caught Deborah's crazy. "She has--they have caught a strange idea that the bell around your neck can summon dragons. Correct them."

"See--" Jacob tried to find a way to say Rhett lied without saying Rhett lied. "--This bell doesn't summon dragons. David said it did, because-- Well-- I don't know why. I think he likes to play pretend, and he got carried away." He reached up to take the bell off his neck. "I'll let you have it if you like. You know, so you can feel better." A friendly smile stretched across his face. I'd rather not. Damon gave it to me so he could find me when I get lost in the dark. Jacob sighed, handed the bell out to Deborah, Ruth, whoever would take it. "Go on. I swear, it can't summon dragons. See for yourself." He nodded.

Deborah's face light up from the special attention Issac was giving her. She was in pure delight. So much so that she didn't really listen to a word he said. But she did stop crying. She felt Issac's warm hand upon her shoulder and knew it was love. She somehow gained Issac's attention. Probably from warning him of the impending everyone being eaten by dragons problem. Perhaps he felt the same way as her. And they'd go for a stroll in the corn with He Who Walks Behind the Rows and be shy with other people but hold deep secrets with each other And He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Her eyes started to twinkle from the thought. It would be perfect.
Deborah finally snapped out of her happy delusions when Zipporah spoke up. She turned her head to see none other than the dragon summoning fiend Jacob! Her lips quivered in fear and she was unable to run. "Issac said stuff!" She yelled as if trying to scare away Jacob and that bell of EVIL. This was a trap somehow. But there didn't seem like anyway out of it. She mustered her strength and grabbed the bell to ring it.

"See. I told ya' it wouldn't summon dragons. David was just making stuff up." Jacob frowned, he really liked that bell. He had grown quite attached to it, but then Rhett had to be a doo doo head and say something to one of the little kids who think everything you say is true, or at least almost everything. How do kids decide what the think is real and what they think isn't? It seems really exhausting, and yet they have the most amount over energy-- ""David is just a doo doo head that wants me to give up my bell," Jacob pouted.

"I will speak to David," Isaac said to Jacob, giving him a short nod. He didn't much enjoy hearing God's children speak ill of another one of God's children, but he didn't bother correcting Jacob. David had frightened the youthful Deborah, after all. And in doing so had greatly annoyed the boy preacher - indirectly, anyway. Deborah's crying would grate one anyone's nerves eventually. And so did incessant bell ringing when all he really wanted to do was nap.
"Please stop ringing the bell, and return it to Jacob. There is no danger."

Zipporah’s eyes narrowed at Jacob’s explanation. It seemed true enough, certainly. David was certainly a trouble-maker. Before He Who Walks Behind the Rows walked among them he had impregnated a woman out of wed-lock. Because of the time this took place, he had been forgiven. Officially and by Isaac, that is.
Zipporah however was a staunch believer in the letter of the word of her God. Children were to be created within wedlock, this was the law. Those who could not follow the Lord’s law were punished. Period.
“Will nothing be done about David?” she asked, careful to keep her tone casual so that Isaac would not see the seething vixen’s true motive. “He frightened this poor child.” So did she. But hopefully no one would remember that. “Will speaking to him be enough?”

Isaac's gaze flicked away from Jacob and dug into Zipporah. "Yes, it will be enough," he said a little too firmly. "Your incessant questioning grows troublesome. I act according to the Lord's Will, Zipporah. It is best that you understand that in life, or you will learn, as Malachai will have to, in death."

Isaac could not have hurt Zipporah more if he had ordered her flogged as he had Rebekah just minutes earlier. Inwardly she crumbled, and she felt her ambitions slip through her fingers. But she did not allow this to show outwardly, however. Outwardly she was as collected as ever, with just a flicker of curiosity flashing behind her green eyes. "I did not mean to offend you, My Lord," she said gently. "I was merely curious as to whether it would be enough. I was just worried about the Fold. But you speak the truth as always." She bowed her head obediently.

Deborah handed the bell back to Jacob. "Sorries Jacob for making everyone sad." She looked down at her feet in shame. "Sorry, Issac and and Zip...Zippoor...Zipporah!" She finished saying the complicated name with the pride of accomplishing a great task. Like making salad for the big kids. But still her first conversation with Issac and it wasn't romantic or dynamic or anything that'd make him want to spend more time with her. No it was over a dumb old lie David said. Hopefully Issac will punish him! Like make HIM make salads! Yeah.
She blinked confused the big kids were talking about something. But she couldn't figure it out. But Issac was made at Zipporah about something. Maybe because she was scary? She was scary though. She really should be less scary. Issac was totally right! But he's always right cause He Who Walks Behind the Rows tells him stuff like that. "Don'ts worry Sip...Zipp-oor-ah!" It became clear to Deborah that Zipporah was probaby scary because she had a scary long name. "Issac will make everything be okays." She cheered hoping to make the big kid happy.

Jacob took the bell back, and was more than happy to do so. He put it back over his head, "It's okay Deborah. That's why pretend can be a little scary." He jinggled the bell a couple times to see if Damon would come running-- but-- no, no Damon. "Shoot," Jacob hissed quietly to himself as the other went on about whatever it is they go on about. He was more concerned about his bell and sleeping. Always so sleepy-- How do insomniacs do it? "Yep, Isaac will make everything okay," he echoed.

The only acknowledgment Isaac bothered to give Zipporah's apology was a curt nod. Her carping at him had not done anything for his mood. And his inclination towards her had soured. She had seemed so virtuous before, but he had never been one to lower himself to answering the inane questions of the unenlightened. And Zipporah was proving to be just that. Unenlightened and full of inane questions. Particularly regarding his judgment - which was the judgment of He Who Walks Behind the Rows.
Deborah, however, displaying the trust and innocence that both Isaac and Isaac's God favored, was fully worthy of his attention. "You are forgiven, Deborah," he said smoothly. "You caused hardly a disturbance." He went to pat her gently on the head as a fond father would, and once again tried to excuse himself.
