"Awe, now now, that's really, uh, sweet of you. And I'm talking to you both," Rhett added, flicking his gaze away from the behemoth so Zipporah could get the congratulations she deserved. "Solomon's being a real gentleman, a stupid gentleman, I guess, but a gentleman at that. And Zipporah, you're really good at playing the reluctant damsel in distress. If plays weren't, uh, sinful, I could see you playing a uh... Amber Clair or a Scarlett O'Lara." He really didn't know that many 'strong' female characters on stage so he just referenced a pair that he recalled...vaguely.
After mucking up the names he went on, "But, uh, like, we can all drop the acts. Except you Solomon, I'm sure you're as stupid as you appear. But you Zipporah, we all know that you like what 'ya see. After a little temper tanrum you want blood. I guess it's like the cigarette after sex."

At that, Zipporah had almost shrieked and run from the room before she realized that Rhett wasn't accusing her of anything and certainly couldn't know that, in the past, she loved to wrap up fornication with a long draw on a cigarette. Such behavior was not becoming of one of the Lord's children, but she had thought nobody knew about what she did before Isaac came and--
He doesn't know, she reminded herself. Don't let him see your panic.
"I don't want to see your blood," she lied. "Please stop insulting my virtue. I don't know how to bear it..."
And with this, one streaming tear drop ran down her face. Game. Set. Match.

Solomon's eyes narrowed and his fists clenched. He wasn't one quick to anger, but the careless insults were growing far too much to bear. "Silence yourself," he ordered. He lifted one of his giant fists and whirled it towards Rhett's cheek.

Zipporah wanted to clap her hands with delight, and hoot and holler in support with Solomon's decision. But instead she just glanced downwards so that her lashes would hide her glee, and listened for the 'thump' of her tormenter's body hitting the floor.

Zipporah was not disappointed. Solomon's fist connected with Rhett's cheek, and he summarily crumpled to the floor. Rubbing his cheek where the fist had worried it, Rhett quickly rose back to his feet, staring blankly at Solomon. "Ugh..." he mumbled. "'Ya know, I really, I really didn't appreciate that, bucko." Not one to back down from his stand, he asked, "Is the truth that hard to swallow?"

Solomon's eyebrows raised when he saw Rhett bounce right up after his punch. His eyes, however, lowered. Not so much at Rhett's mock-scolding, but at the sudden realization that he had struck another of the Lord's children. Whether or not he deserved it was not Solomon's place to judge. Guilty or not, Solomon was firm in his morals. Being cruel to a modest woman like Zipporah was just wrong.
"The truth I can swallow..." he mumbled. "It's your lies that I can't."

The streets were empty. They always were these days. The corn had somehow migrated from the fields and into random places; the shops, the streets, the drainpipes. It all disgusted Esau. He was walking down the street on which the old school house stayed.
Come on lawrence...to the playground, ho!
Oh, the time spent there, the time enjoyed there. Esau needed a pick-me-up. His walk was that of one similar to a man who was walking through three feet of snow. He trudged up the stairs of the schoolhouse and entered its doors. Still so similar, yet different. He went into where his classroom once was and sat down in his desk.
Something was inscribed on the desk, L-A-W. He had been slowly carving his name in the wood when he still attended school. He knew it was wrong, but it wasn't going to hurt anybody. However, now, he still felt a bit of guilt from defacing the property.
He did not want to close his eyes. Instead he spaced out, much like he did in the church, and tried to listen for the joyous laughter of recesses past.
He was completely unaware of the people who were in the room with him.

"Lies?" Rhett echoed Solomon's accusation, his eyes wide as though he was shocked at the very accusation. And in truth, he would have been shocked if there was any truth to the statement. And the reason for that was simple. "I uh, I don't lie, Solomon. I don't even stretch the truth. And uh, Zipporah here, she sorta threw a bit of a --- a tempter tantrum? And then I called her on it, and you punched me in the face 'cuz...um...'cuz...?" He shrugged, and added, "And, really, if you have to punch me, just call me out and we can fight outside. And you know, away from Delilah." He nodded at his daughter. "I wouldn't want her to see me murder you."
Delilah, however, wouldn't have noticed her father murder anyone. Her focus was completely and utterly on the spaced out Esau. "You dead?" she asked in the innocent way only a child can manage.

Could it be that a voice from his past had pierced his subconscious and made it to the part of his brains translated words? No. However, it was the next best thing. A sweet child had just asked him a question, and, in turn, brought him out of his trance. He smiled at the high-pitched words which were directed at him.
He turned his head towards the child, "No, sweetie, I'm not dead." He paused with a smile. "I've just had a long, long day."

Well, how great for you! Zipporah thought, her attention suddenly diverted away from Rhett and latching onto an even less reputable source: Esau. The little heathen had apparently snuck into the room unnoticed, as evil had a tendency to do.
She hesitated for but a moment, but ultimately decided that Esau was worth far less than Rhett, and therefore she had no reason to even pretend to hide her dislike, even in front of Solomon. "Eternity is far longer," she jeered, referencing the infidel's ultimate destination to hell. Delilah was Rhett's spawn, but even so, Zipporah moved protectively in front of the child, cutting off the path between the innocent and the condemned. "Why do you come here?" she challenged. "Do you wish to claim another soul for hell in Delilah? Leave this place, now, before I deign to give you the punishment that- " she held her tongue before she scandalized Isaac's name by saying punishment that Isaac didn't give you!. Even with the flogging, Esau had not been adequately punished.
She would accept an infidel's death, and nothing less.

Delilah cocked her head to the side and stretched her neck around Zipporah so that her dark eyes - a gift from her father - raking over Esau curiously. Her speculation seemed to in-depth that if she had been just a decade older, it would have been described as 'leering' or 'lecherous'. "Long day?" she echoed. "Why?"
Rhett carelessly ignored Delilah's poking at Esau's mess of a life, rubbed his cheek where Solomon had worried it, and called to Zipporah, "Oh, we done now?"

Zipporah's response rose unbidden. "For now," she called over her shoulder at Rhett. Rhett was troublesome and hit a little too close to him with his observations, but she wasn't quite certain if he was an outright sinner. Esau, however, was an acknowledged heretic.
ooc - sorry for the long wait and short post. busy, busy, busy.

Solomon didn't rise to Rhett's insults, he instead just stabbed him with a level glare. Even if Rhett was right on one or two points - maybe Zipporah did throw a tempter tantrum. The room certainly looked like it - he had no right to degrade the girl in such a manner. And then to hide behind his daughter, that was certainly cowardly.
But, Solomon didn't argue. The tempest seemed to have calmed. Esau was in the room, and seemed to be troubling the virtuous Zipporah, but he didn't feel the need to aggressively step to her defense yet. Esau was a heretic, but he was also a broken and bleeding heretic (Solomon had seen to that) so he had the advantage of the large boy's pity. "Leave him alone, please," he asked the fiesty female politely.

Oy, Esau thought, oy. He stood up from his desk and nodded to all in the room. "I just think I'll be a... heading on out." He began to walk to the door, "Good day." He then left.

Zipporah wiped her hands together, thusly wiping her hands of him. The little maggot had tainted the air, and she could feel the air tainting her lungs.
"Good riddance," she breathed, tossing a wave of golden blonde hair behind her. She turned awkwardly to Rhett and Solomon, pasting a smile on her lips. Esau was gone, but frankly, she didn't want to here anymore. The air was tainted, her superstitions told her. And furthermore, Rhett knew far more about her from this conversation alone than she cared for him to know. "Excuse me," she said sweeping him a bow. "I would like to take my leave."
