Joan leaned over and whispered something in her brother’s ear. He turned his head to listen more closely. “What’s that?” She whispered to him again with her hand cupped around her mouth. “Hmm—“ he nodded and then his gaze returned back to the boy. “So my sister wants to know if she can adopt you as her little bro—“ he paused “Wait a minute! I’m your little brother!”
Joan rolled her eyes, “You’re only younger by fifteen minutes. Stubborn you were for waiting that long. But nonetheless, that doesn’t count.” She pretended that she wasn’t slightly amused by Jude’s jealousy, but the smile shone through quite brightly.
Jude still pouted slightly, “In any case, she wants to know if you’ll be her new adopted little brother.” He turned and raised his voice to be quite clear, “Even if Joan calls me baby brother all the time” he then turned back to look at Feng and with a sweet smile, continued, “She thinks your cute and she’s always wanted a little brother.”
“Less work than having your own little children, you know,” Joan interrupted.
“Besides that, she doesn’t want to get married—“
Joan chirped again, “Well it’s not that I don’t—“
“So, yeah. Do you accept or decline her offer?” They both stared at Feng with wide anticipating eyes.

He noticed how they were whispering to each other, and at first felt a little discomfort in that. They could be talking about him, perhaps planning something unmentionable to do with the boy, but of course, the boy considered the fact that if the twins had wanted to harm him they would’ve done so already. They were obviously bigger, older, and stronger. Plus, it would’ve been two against one. He would’ve sighed out of relief, though, upon Jude’s remark, although he was more surprised than relieved. After all, it wasn’t every day someone wanted to adopt another.
He was speechless for the time being, and then had to blush at being called cute. He wasn’t really that cute, was he? If he had a mirror, he would definitely look but of course he wouldn’t really think of himself as cute. He was rather nervous at the moment, and then heard Joan mention having her own children and referring to him as less work. Getting married was completely a short subject as it was immediately canceled by Jude’s last statement. He blinked, his face completely red, as the boy stared back at the twins bewildered. Then he had that feeling, and nervously asked for the twins to look away as he stood up.
After he had gone into the trees on the other side of the creek away from the twins and relieved himself, he returned to the twins and scratched his hair a bit, still confused and not sure of what to say about the request. He knew Jude would be jealous of such a thing, but he didn’t want to upset Joan, so he was nervous to say anything. So, instead of being affirmative or negative, he simply asked politely, “C-could I think about it? I mean, I had a big sister before, um… I don’t know.” The boy shrugged uncomfortably, worried that the twins might now try to hurt him.

They both looked away as Feng asked them to. They continued to whisper little meaningless nothings at each other till he came back. "You want to think about it?" Jude repeated, then grinned. "Of course you can think about it. It seems cruel to, make you decide now. And even more cruel to replace a sister." He shot a glare at his own.
"Hey I didn't say I was replacing anyone!" Joan snapped at Jude's remark. "Actually, I wouldn't be replacing anyone. People have more than one sibling you know!" Her cheeks became slightly flushed as she argued her brother.
"I was just kidding you know." His eye's widened as he stared at her throwing a small fit. "In any case," He embraced his sister tightly now. "I kind of figured you wouldn't want to be adopted. And honestly, this sister is a lot of work." The big devious grin came back.
Joan let out a heavy sigh and ignored his comment. "I suppose I have a baby brother anyway. " She pecked his cheek lightly. "And he is probably a bigger handful than ten of you, Feng."
"I resent that." Jude was back to being playful.
"Hello! I want to remind you, you said it about me first," she teased him, then tugged at his shorts.
"Don't worry, Feng. She'll change her mind about it later I's sure." Jude chuckled and splashed around a bit. Joan just stared at him with that same 'what am I going to do with you' look that she often times gets.

It hadn’t been really necessary for the twins to look away since the boy had found a secluded spot, but he would’ve preferred for them to do so as it was more respectful. He hadn’t noticed how they kept whispering with each other until he had started walking back toward them, where they had stopped abruptly upon his reaching them. When he was told that he could think about it, he was a bit relieved but still nervous. His mind was telling him no, but he wouldn’t say that out loud now anyway. Not unless he had someone to back him up in case something was to happen. But he smiled kindly to the twins as they started arguing. It was a bit funny to see teens acting like little children.
Jude had then started to speak to him again. He shrugged but didn’t say anything. He rather wished that the subject be changed, but of course didn’t voice it out loud just yet. Of course, it seemed the twins were having a good time teasing each other so he allowed them to play around a bit, pretending to be arguing with each other if that was what they were doing. He noticed how immensely close they were to each other and smiled a bit, pleased to know that at least there were people around here who could still love each other like family. Perhaps it would be a good thing, to consider Joan his big sister, but to consider Jude his big brother. Well, he never had a big brother before, so he wouldn’t really understand what to do. It could be cool, but Feng needed to think about it first, and so he was going to. He wouldn’t want to be referred to as a baby person, of course.
He hadn’t had any family whatsoever in a long time. So long he had lost count, if he could even count. With a nervous smile just to try and reassure himself, he was soon splashed in the face, not intentionally, and with a sudden giggle, splashed back at the twins. The sun was starting to get high up in the sky, meaning it was probably an hour or less until noon. The sun was how the boy would tell the time of the day throughout the day, like those of the past would’ve done. Of course, he didn’t always pay attention to the sun, as he was either resting, working, or whatever he would’ve been doing at the time. He caused another splash at the twins again and then stood up, brushing off the mud. “Hey, Jude, can you do any flips? If you want, we could go down to that spot you guys were talking about, maybe find a thick branch somewhere to jump off. Let’s do a flipping contest.”

"I can do some flipping," he said with a smile. "I can do summersults and hand stands and stuff like that. Joan's more into gymnastics." Jude stood up and brushed mud off his rear, and his sister smack him once because it just happened to be in her face. "It's kind of a long walk to get there. It's right on the border of Gatlin. I don't know how many branches there are though. Pretty much all the trees are right here. Kinda lame how Gatlin has more corn than anything. No real scenery." Jude then proceeded to shake his but in Joan's face.
She was about ready to push him over, but decided against it, seems how the water wasn't very deep. "Corn can be pretty--" She tried to sound convincing, but wasn't, at all. "Trees are prettier. I would love to go to the tropics, but that's never going to happen."
Jude lent a hand to the girl as she pulled herself up, "Which begs the question-- Have you ever been out of Gatlin, kid?" He looked up at the sky, absentmindedly. "We went to Canada once when we were younger. There were lots of trees. It was so much more beautiful than Gatlin." Being older, the twins had more reminisces of a life before the purging, and they were glad for that. Having no adults in someways was nice, but in others, all the rules that come with it seemed harsh. He let out a hollow moan and looked back at Joan, who was getting out of the water.
"We also saw the Niagara Falls." Joan ringed out her hair then started to slip her dress back on. "There were these awesome wax museums. The wax dummies looked so incredibly real, that you wouldn't be surprised if they grabbed at you. And yet, do you remember the time you were looking at the Frankenstein monster?"
"And then he grabbed at me? That scared the crap outta me!" Both the twins laughed. Jude cleared his throat and then talked all serious. "Right, I guess we better be going if you want to swim in our spot."

He had grinned at Jude, glad that the young man had somewhat agreed to the contest, and appeared to be impressed when he mentioned Joan being into gymnastics. “Maybe you can do some flips, too, Joan,” giggled the little one as he headed to the bank where his clothes were. He was kind of reluctant at first because he wasn’t sure how the twins would react to his ruined shorts, since it did seem like they had better clothes than he did. But then he ignored the fear and managed to put his shorts on then his shirt, with a little difficulty. It would be pretty obvious the boy didn’t have any underwear or shoes, but it didn’t seem to bother Feng much. He was kind of amused with the twins, how they seemed to constantly pick on each other.
He had never heard of the tropics, but he could sense the disappointment in the girl’s voice. “I’ve been to the beach, several times,” he shrugged, “But I don’t really remember it all that much. I just know there’s water bigger than this, there’s softer and warmer sand, and a lot of people. Ships, too.” He giggled, “I was on a ferry once. I think.” He shrugged again, having a bit of a problem with the red shirt. It seemed like it wouldn’t go on over his head, as the collar was a bit smaller than his head, and one of his arms had got stuck so he couldn’t pull it down easily. Not wanting the twins to see this little mistake that was getting too common for him, he swiftly turned around and with several grunts tried to pull it down while listening to them. However, the shirt was officially stuck, for him.
“Monster?” He gasped lightly as he spun around, able to see through the red cotton of his shirt, “Where?!” He blushed at once, realizing he had made a fool out of himself, after hearing the twins talk about said monster some more. “Oh…” He nodded as he started to take his shirt off, but unfortunately, it was stuck either direction. He growled in frustration and decided he would just walk to their spot the way he was. “Let’s go, I guess.” He smiled at them, although they wouldn’t know he was smiling at them since his face was pretty much hidden. Stupid shirt… Why did it have to shrink?! The boy thought to himself. But he was rather excited about to getting to explore a new part of the creek, especially when he had new friends now.

"Do you need help with that," Joan asked in almost a motherly tone. "It looks like you might need a new shirt. After all you're probably growing a lot. Boys seem to do that at your age." She chuckled. She grabbed her shoes and just held them in her hand instead of putting them on, while Jude, who put shoes on just threw his shirt over his shoulder. "I used to be taller than Jude here, but one day he just sprouted up and grew three whole inches bigger than me."
"Yeah, well, boys are usually taller than girls." He stood on his tiptoes to show that he was taller than Joan, or at least taller than he actually was.
Joan scrunched him back down. "Not necessarily. That Rebekah girl is really tall. And Isaac is short even for his age." She grabbed her brother's hand with her free hand and hummed a tune quietly. She missed being able to sing. "Have you ever noticed little'uns like to sing? Too bad Malachai is such a jerk about it."
Jude hummed a long, slightly louder. "Malachai is strict about everything. But he won't be bothering anyone anytime soon." Both of the twins snickered. They never really cared for Malachai and didn't think he was as impressive as everyone made him out to be.

The boy was almost more than obliged to basically raise his arms with an eager nod, meaning he would allow Joan to help. Of course, with the nod hidden like that, he would have to use his voice, so he did. “Yes, please.” The girl had indeed gone to help pull it down with a light popping noise coming from the shirt. He shrugged at her comment about his growing, “I guess. I don’t really want to grow up… I just thought my clothes shrunk or something.” He muttered lightly, as if he was a bit disappointed in that particular fact about his growing. He did want to stay a child just so he wouldn’t die, but that was entirely impossible. Unless he could stunt his growth and not grow any older, the inevitable would come.
He was rather amused, though, when he noticed Jude trying to goof around with his height by standing on his toes. Joan started talking about another girl, and then Isaac. He shuddered a bit at hearing that name. That name wasn’t ever a pleasant sound, of course. Sometimes it was, but most times it just wasn’t. But what caused shivers to go down his spine was the mention of Malachai. “Ugh, that guy creeps me out,” said the boy to himself. He glanced awkwardly at the twins, worried that they might’ve been upset about his sudden statement, although it had been barely audible.
Finally, he had turned on his bare heel and nodded to the twins. “Let’s go! I can’t wait to see this place you two keep talking about. It must be awesome.” He smiled kindly at them before starting to step away in the direction they would’ve been going. If they would talk on the way, he would most likely listen than to talk himself. He was usually quiet, especially when he was moving. Talking and walking never seemed to go hand in hand for the boy, he would always have to stop if he wanted to talk, and if he wasn’t talking he had to be energetic, so every now and then he would sprint a little as well, but would stay with the twins.

On the walk to the specific spot, Jude had a habit of picking things up and playing with them. Then dropping them and picking something else up. It was maybe a half an hour walk at the most, and even that it wouldn’t take so long if Jude wasn’t so easily distracted. Joan would grab his hand or arm and try to keep him from picking things up, but then he would whimper like a dog, and she would roll her eyes and let him go every single time. Joan would ask Feng questions and most of the time Jude would answer instead. He couldn’t seem to get it through his head that, yes, his sister does talk to other people. This was just usual behavior for the two of them.
“So when we get there I am totally getting naked!” Jude raised his head proudly, as if it was something to be proud of.
“Well, you do that. I don’t know how I feel about it with two boys. On the other hand, Feng doesn’t seem to mind naked women, but perhaps its because he hasn’t hit that age” She stared at her brother curiously as he pick up yet another mysterious object. She shook her head.
“Ooh ooh!” Jude got all excited and took off in a sprint, “There it is! There it is!” His articles of clothing flew up into the air just before he hit the water. Huge waves broke of the bank.
Joan followed behind picking up his clothes and setting them neatly on the ground. “I guess there’s nothing to lose.” She took off her clothing and joined in, Jude watching her excitedly the entire time of course. She splashed him, then giggled, whispering to Jude, “you pervert.’

He had to giggle every time Jude seemed to get distracted. He could tell by the look on Joan’s face every now and then that it annoyed her. While she was talking to him, trying to ask him questions, Jude would always jump in to answer for him, as if he knew everything about Feng already. It was a bit of a good feeling, but it was also a bit annoying. However, the boy simply let it go, he wasn’t going to let something so small become such a big deal after all. He had to stifle a giggle when Jude had exclaimed his plan to go naked upon their arrival, but it wasn’t such a big surprise to the young boy. If they wanted to go naked, fine for them. It was their decision, he couldn’t force them to do or not to do something. And besides, he was going to strip naked again anyway when they would get there. He could tell that Joan was a bit uncomfortable, but didn’t say anything about it.
For a while, he had pondered that question Joan had popped earlier, or rather, asked through Jude, about him being her little brother. Was she expecting him to be Jude’s little brother? Would Jude get insanely jealous if he had agreed to it? He didn’t want to upset Jude, and he didn’t want to upset Joan. All those questions kept flying through his mind as he tried to make his final decision. But it wouldn’t let him think clearly. Did Joan have a reason for wanting him as part of her family? He needed to know at least the reason why; just because he was cute wasn’t a good enough reason. And even then, the boy didn’t consider himself cute. He was after all ten, if he was younger he would’ve been more than pleased about being considered cute. But he wanted to be considered handsome now, nothing less than that. But of course, he kept quiet about all this until Jude had loudly announced their arrival, thus throwing him off his train of thoughts.
He was very surprised to see Jude sprint away so quickly while managing to pull off everything he had been wearing. He had never seen anyone strip while they were running naked and not even trip. He knew he wouldn’t be able to do that, but clearly Jude seemed excited about this particular spot. He giggled, walking calmly and coolly toward the bank near where Jude had jumped in the water. The sand was a bit wet but it was warm to the skin, which sparked one of Feng’s old memories about the beach. But soon it was to be put in the back of his mind as he pushed down his shorts while Joan had started stripping, and then proceeded to take off his shirt. Where he was once again stuck. “Grr!” He couldn’t stand that shirt every now and then, it always backfired on him when he wanted to either put it on or take it off. He would have to rip it a bit if he wanted to keep wearing it. He would stumble around on the bank trying to pull it off until he tripped backwards over Joan’s dress, feeling his rear hit the sand in a split second. He muttered to himself, “This sucks donkey butt!”

"Let me offer you a hand-- again," Joan giggled as she walked toward the edge of the water. Once again, Jude watching her every move. She again, pulled it up off over his head. Her face contorted as she seemed slightly uncomfortable, it seemed like it would be painful to get that shirt off. But it didn’t fail to ‘pop’ right off. “You need a shirt that unbuttons. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about it ever getting stuck.”
“It’s really warm except where your feet are at the very bottom.” Jude interrupted. He waded in deeper, where the water came up to his collar bone. “And sometimes you can feel fish nibbling at your toes. Doesn’t hurt though.”
Joan smiled at his childishness and came in close to him. “Are you going to try and get your toes nibbled?” she asked. She placed her hands on Jude’s shoulders, and began to rub them. “Boy, your muscles sure are tense.”
“That’s what happens when you’re an able body male here in Gatlin. You get put to work and your body takes the toll. But you wouldn’t know that ‘cause you’re a girl.” He flittered his fingers in the air playfully mocking her. “Why, Feng isn’t even full grown yet and I’ll bet they make him do all kinds of manual labor. Am I right?” He then put his hands back under the water and naturally placed them on Joan’s waist.
“Yeah, well girls have to sew, babysit, cook, clean, and pull babies from between our loins.” She grunted, being quite serious. She quickly changed the subject. “So are we going to have this contest or what?”

“Thank you,” said the boy, glad to know that she was quite helpful even when he wouldn’t have to ask her. “Ouch,” he said as the shirt roughed up his face ever so slightly. She was right, he would need something simpler, or at least larger, so that it wouldn’t always get stuck. He wouldn’t want to accidentally pull off his own head, now would he? He glanced at the woman before him, mildly surprised to see that she was in the buff. He wasn’t really expecting that, but eh, there was that saying, “whatever rocks one’s boat”. He glanced toward Jude now, for he was speaking. He giggled slightly, and shook his head a bit as he stood up, preparing to jump in the water by stretching. “I don’t think I can get in that far deep, I’m only like, what, a foot shorter than you?” He was quite short, of course, but he didn’t know his exact height, unfortunately. He was roughly four feet tall, give or take a couple of inches or so.
Feng had to giggle quite a bit, he had already jumped into the water and found a safe spot where just the top of his shoulders would nearly be submersed by the water, his chin barely an inch above the surface. He was giggling because Jude was once again picking on Joan, this time mocking her and whatnot. He nodded briefly when Jude had asked about his having to do manual labor. “Yup. I carry water for everyone, and sometimes I have to work in the cornfields. Sometimes I have to carry some heavy stuff, heavier than the pails of water. I usually carry like four pails of water,” And once again, he was compelled to show off his muscles by tensing his arms and flexing his muscles. He certainly loved to show off his muscles. Of course, he wasn’t as obsessed as those blasted bodybuilders, he would never submit to that, but if he got to impress people, he would certainly take the opportunity to do so.
He nodded, though, agreeing with Joan. “If it wasn’t for her and the other girls, we probably wouldn’t be able to eat or… Wait… Babies come out from between your… um… things? I thought storks brought them whenever someone got married.” He suddenly blushed, as he had suddenly felt like an idiot for ever mentioning something so awkward and strange to the boy. He shook his head to try and shake it off, then nodded at the girl. “Sure, um, who wants to go first? Do whatever kind of flip you can, you will get points, and at the end whoever gets the most points win. Or you can do any other tricks if you can’t flip really well.” He was trying not to babble at the point, because he usually babbled when he was nervous or confused, and he certainly didn’t want the twins knowing that. “So… Who wants to go first?” The boy repeated.

"I'll go!" Jude dove for the shore. He certainly liked to show off. Actually both of the twins loved to show off. Jude was very lean, but well built and he knew it. He liked the opportunity to show Joan that he was strong and definitely able bodied. “I am going!” He pushed himself up so that he was walking on his hands. Joan giggled as he was naked when doing this. Then after walking a few steps he pushed off, as though it was a jump, and did a flip.
“Well that was—“ Joan couldn’t stop laughing. “That was certainly something.”
“Oh com’mon it deserves more than that!” Jude went under, and Joan looked around, waiting for him to come back up.
“Oh no—“ she groaned right before her brother pulled her down under by her ankles.
Jude popped back up first. “So, it’s your turn, kid.” Once again, calling him kid Very bad habit.
Joan came back up and tackled him down. They both flopped around like a couple of fish. “How—come—it’s—not—my—turn?”
“Because—“ Jude started, then pulled her up and flipped her over his head. Making quite the splash, hopping he didn’t hit ‘the kid’. “I said so?”
Joan then came back to him and jumped up so he could piggy back her. “Yeah, alright. I guess that’s cool. But the coolest stuff we can do is the stuff we do together.” She nodded with a smug grin. “That’s the awesome part about being a twin.”

He was giggling so hard now while Jude was showing off. He knew that Jude was kind of like him, someone that wanted to show off just how capable or cool they were, but it was quite a hilarious sight to behold, still. It was a bit awkward as well, but Feng wasn’t letting it bother him at all. People did crazy things when they were clothed, but usually they did crazier things when they weren’t. Of course Feng would know that, he had had plenty of the crazies with his family back in the old days. He smiled as he thought a bit about that, but was suddenly thrown back into reality when Jude had splashed into the water. He had seen the flip, of course, and nodded with an impressed smirk. “That was good.” He giggled when Joan had gone under against her will, and watched as the twins fought a bit.
He had already started walking out of the water, going as far as he could until basically he reached the end of sand and feeling the tips of grass tickle his toes quite a bit. He backed up about a foot, his back facing the twins. He didn’t mind being called a kid, he knew he was definitely a kid, and being referred to as a kid made him feel younger, so that was a good feeling in a place like this. Where growing older only meant the inevitable. Today, he was just going to try and have fun with the twins, even if it would last all day. It seemed like they were really good company, and that to them he was just as good. He giggled as it seemed they hadn’t stopped fighting just yet when he had looked back to see if they were watching. “How about Joan be the point keeper?” He said as he turned away, positioning himself for his own maneuver.
He started throwing himself up in the air, doing a backward somersault and landing nicely on his feet. But he didn’t stop there, for he pulled yet another backward somersault and again another one and one more before he found himself landing in the water on his behind, causing a large splash in the direction of the twins. He was giggling, though, glad because he had managed to do three backward flips in a row without falling on the second one. “I guess that saying’s true, practice makes perfect,” the boy said as he turned around, seeing Joan riding on Jude’s back. “Piggy back rides, eh? I think you’re next, Joan.” He smiled kindly, but did seem a little tense about how the twins had been positioned. Of course, it wouldn’t be that obvious unless they were watching him intently like hawks.

“Hmm—Well I think that was a three and Jude you get a one.” She got a devious smile and looked down at her brother.
“Huh—that was totally a two at least. That’s sooooo not fair. You just like him better!” Jude pouted.
“No. His move was just way more impressive than yours.” She patted her brother’s head. Jude threw her off his back and she came back down into the water. The twins both grinned and giggles playfully when she came back up. “Alright, alright. You heard Feng it’s my turn.” She got up out of the water. Jude crossed his arms. How could she possibly do better than that right? She stood on the edge of the grass and wiggled her toes, feeling the ground, and how it shifted below her. With her arms in the air she began to run toward the water. She threw herself down to do a cartwheel and when she came back to being head up she jumped, tucking her knees against her chest, then did two flips before she finally hit the water. “After peeking back up, she rang out her blond hair and looked at both the boys. “So. How did I do?”
