Jude and Joan both grinned when he asked for food. “Do we have any food?” They both said and laughed like that was a stupid question.
The arrived at a small shack type building that the twins claimed as their clubhouse. Jude bent crouched down and pulled up a huge part of the wood floor to show a fairly large hole in the center of the floor. In side of it were the keys, many cans of food with a can opener, and lots of things that were banned in Gatlin, mostly toys and small trinkets. “We have plenty of food. What are you looking for?”
“Ooh!” Joan said with great excitement, she then pulled out a very dirty stuffed bear. “Mr. Snuggles!” She cuddled it and brushed dirt off the top of its head. She then looked at her twin, “I want pears.”
“Yeah, alright.”

He had that sudden notion that something could go deadly wrong for him when the twins had grinned like that upon his inquiry, even repeating his question in an odd fashion, as if it had been stupid to ask. He watched and followed as the twins approached a small building that was like a shack, and watched as Jude had gotten down to the ground and pulled out a board to reveal a large hole. The first thing he saw were the many keys, and he gasped in awe as he crouched down by the hole, gaping at them. “Whoa…” He reached forward to try and grab a large one.
He glanced at Joan as she pulled out a teddy bear and smirked lightly. Girls and stuffed animals, they were so a couple. He looked down at the cans and scratched his chin. He didn’t like cold meat, and some fruits and vegetables were better off not being eaten, like pickles and grapes, at least for him. He felt that the pickles were too sour for him and that grapes just felt like little bugs rolling around in his mouth. “Um, sweet potatoes, yams,” he pointed to a can with an picture of orange sweet potatoes across it. “Please?” Feng added politely.

"Yep here you go kid." Jude pulled out one of many yam cans, and threw it at Feng. "Catch." He didn’t give it a thought. Throwing things is just what you do. He then threw a large can of pears at his sister, and with ease she caught it. “Personally, I like just about anything. Although the canned meat is kind nasty.”
“Kinda?” Joan dropped the bear back in the hole and then proceeded to pull out a can opener since her twin didn’t bother with that. “Canned meat is raunchy! Who came up with that?”
“My point is I like food, ‘sept canned meat.”
“You’re gorss. You would eat about anything. I could put road-kill in front of you and you’d eat it.” She pulled out a pear half and bit off a piece.
Jude rolled his eyes, “I would not eat road-kill. Stop being over dramatic.”
“You ate a spider!”
“And it was quite tasty. I would definitely eat more of those little buggers,” he grinned and rubbed his stomach.
“Ew!” The shear terror on Joan’s face was quite unattractive.

He blinked as the twins started to quarrel. “Is that what you two do a lot, fight over little things?” He asked right off the bat, not even thinking. It was just really strange for him to see two people be so close and yet seem at odds with each other from time to time. It was actually as well very amusing. Canned meat wasn’t really all that delicious, unless it was to be cooked. He remembered once he had tried to eat some raw meat out of the can but threw it up after and got sick for a couple of days. He managed to get better, but he had made a vow never to touch canned meat again unless he was able to cook it. Of course, he wouldn’t know how to control a fire, let alone start one on his own.
He made a face of disgust upon hearing the spider. Spiders weren’t really one of his favorite things in the world, but eating one was just worse than even looking at them. He felt like he wanted to puke knowing that Jude wouldn’t mind eating any more of those dreadful eight-legged creepy crawlers. He shuddered slightly, putting the can up to his mouth, the can he had actually fumbled when it was tossed to him but he managed to pick it up and had asked for the can to be opened. He was eating literally out of the can without a hand to reach it; it was basically like he was drinking from the can, something similar to that. Every time he took a slurp or bit into a potato, he would glance casually at the pile of keys, already eager to look and sift through them.
He was quite in a hurry to finish off his can. Once it was almost empty, he set it aside, as he wasn’t one to waste food, and knelt down on his knees, crouching down to bring his face closer to the hole. His good hand went and grabbed a few keys right off the top and he started looking through them. “Whoa… A black key… I didn’t know there were black keys…” He whispered deeply in awe as he examined it closer, fingering along the lines and jagged edges. Quickly, he glanced at Jude with a hopeful twinkle in his eyes, asking, “I can still have these?”

“Yep, that’s what I said isn’t it kiddo?” Jude finished off a can of—something, then began in on another. “Keys to things I don’t even know what they are too. All yours. They’re pretty useless now.”
“They wouldn’t be if you actually locked anything.” She shook her head, and continued to eat small bites of the pears till they were gone. She then sipped up the juice and set the can down.
“Nothing needs to be locked. No one in Gatlin is gonna go through our farm. And even if they came near the place, they wouldn’t want to because of something or another that was said.” Jude belched, quite loudly actually, then went to get yet another can of food. “I like corn and all, but I’m kinda sick of looking at it.”
“Hush don’t say that!” Joan said it more out of her brother’s sake. Who knows. Her brother could say the wrong thing and He Who Walks Behind the Rows would hear it, tell Isaac and he would be sacrificed. Joan loved her brother too much to let him go. And more over, she didn’t want to walk into the rows by herself.
“Right—I forgot—we can’t speak our mind here in Gatlin.” Jude shook his head and then stuffed more food into his face. “It’s not like I said that I don’t believe, because I believe. I just get bored. Yeah, yeah, I know. If I was working all the time I wouldn’t be bored. But there’s only so much work to be done.” He finished off the can and threw it down.
“Jude—“

He just chuckled at their constant quarreling, finding it easier to get amused by then the actual conversations they would often share. With a soft chuckle, he continued to rummage through the keys, and found a few more interesting ones that he would be more than happy to keep with him. By now he had noticed that Jude had taken a couple of more cans and had eaten through them as well. He raised his eyebrow, giving the teenager a small smirk across his visage as he glanced across at Joan, wondering if she could be thinking the same thing. It seemed that Jude must’ve had a bottomless pit or something like that.
He frowned a bit upon Jude’s complaining about the corn, but he nodded to agree. “It can get boring… But it’s what we do and have to do. Can’t really whine about it much, it could be worse, right?” The boy did have a point, they could’ve all been killed instead of just the children being spared. Other than that, they could’ve been slaves. The irony was that they pretty much were slaves, having to work constantly and not having any time to play or sing, the likes. Feng had the time to play because he was smart, he could find it and take advantage of it. But he had to be careful not to get caught. To him, Isaac was okay, just a bit, although he wasn’t sure whether to trust the young preacher. Malachai was not okay, at all, in the boy’s opinion. “Ah-choo!”
“Pardon.” He said as he sniffled a bit, reaching up to wipe his nose. “Allergies suck,” said the youth, as he glanced around the place. “So what’s this place? It’s too small to be a normal house.” He was sure it was some kind of clubhouse, shed, maybe a storage building. Feng stood up and decided he would explore around the building. “it’s a bit of a nice place you have here. Can we go exploring?” He turned and glanced at the twins. “Or maybe not, since you probably know the whole place like the back of your hand.”

"Bless you," Joan said, as though it came naturally, and it did. One of those things you just say.
"This," Jude began on another can, "This is our clubhouse. We built it when we were--"
"Nine," Joan finished her brother's sentence.
"Right," juice from the canned fruit he was eating dribbled down his chin. They were truly some of the juiciest pears he had ever had. "we had help from our older cousin of course. He was killed in the purging." He shrugged the comment off with another mouthfull.
Joan rolled her eyes and giggled, then covered her mouth. "So you want to explore. You can go ahead. There are a lot of places that no one knows about. Jude and I know more than the people who built it."
Another can dropped to Jude's feet. "It's fun. I can show you the best hiding places, kid." He whipped of the liquid with his sleeve and grinned. "Unless you want to look around yourself. pretty easy to get lost though."
Both twins grinned and gave each other a look. Their minds went in the same direction. "Our one uncle--"
"the drunk one--"
"Yes, Jude, the drunk one. He came looking for us the one day-- and he got so lost-- and stuck--" Joan giggled.
"It was probably his beer gut that kept him there. He wasn't exactly a small guy." Joan then went to his sister's side and wrapped an arm around her waist. "So do you want our directions or not?"

He was a bit annoyed with their finishing each other’s sentences. Many people would think it was cool, but he himself wasn’t very fond of it when there were interruptions, even though they were for good intentions. He just simply shuddered it off and carefully adjusted his sling as he glanced out into the open. It did seem quite vast, but he figured, for having a good sense of direction, that he could find his way back here. However, it was better to try and stick with the twins in a new place like this, lest he wanted to get caught out there on his own. It was better to be caught with others in forbidden zones, if there were such zones as that, than to be caught alone and not have any hope in the end.
He did let out a little yawn, but it was very short, as he shook his head firmly and glanced back at the twins. “Okay, let’s go,” he said with a soft smile, watching them. By now he had noticed the cans on the floor and almost scoffed but he managed to hold it back thinking of the possibility that he could upset Jude again by doing such a thing. “Can we explore the house first?” He was rather impressed that the twins had built this clubhouse, with some help from their cousin, but was a bit disappointed he would never get to meet the said cousin who was that kind. It was kind of surprising, to know that there were still adults that weren’t so sinful. This was where the confusion would kick in, whenever he thought about it. But he didn’t think about it long before, and he certainly didn’t think about it long today, as he had already strolled out into the open and was facing the house.

The twins moved along the side of the house to the get to the front porch, assuming that Feng was still with them. Jude climbed the steps and opened the front door for his sister and the young boy who was now his brother. “After you.”
The living room wasn’t very big, the house wasn’t very big. There was a round carpet laid down in the middle, it was slightly blood stained from the purging. Other than that there was a television, a couple tacky owl lamps, and a really crummy couch. “We weren’t expecting guests, you’ll have to excuse the mess,” Jude joked around with Feng.
“It’s always this messy, guests or no guests,” Joan moved next to the rug and looked at her brother. They were giving each other a look like they oftentimes did. She then nodded her head.
Jude came over and helped his sister peel the rug away from the wood floor. There there was a hole just big enough to stick a hand in. Jude did so and pulled up a panel, just like in the clubhouse. “I think it was supposed to be a pantry or something, but this is Joan and my favorite place to hide.”
“There’s a couple of tunnels, crawlspaces as you will down there.”

He rolled his eyes at Jude’s corny joke about not having the house clean in time for guests. He wasn’t really a guest. In fact, he would probably end up living here. They did need a warm place to survive during the winter, and even then during the fall as well. Feng was already thinking about things that he could do to this place to barricade it, but he wasn’t open about his ideas to the twins, in fear of upsetting them or that they could tell on him. “Wow,” said the boy, though, “We could stay in here during the cold months. It’s kind of warm, and we can clean it up anytime, can’t we?” He was terrified to be in his own house by himself, so most of the time he would stay away from there.
He was concerned as he watched the twins go about to their own business, pulling up a carpet and then apparently some kind of trapdoor. “Wow.” He was in awe. “You guys have secret stuff everywhere, don’t you?” He scoffed with a smile as he knelt down on his knees and glanced under the hole carefully using the one hand for support. “Wow, it’s kind of dark.” He wouldn’t dare say that he was scared of the dark, so simply sat back up, muttering softly, “Could get lost in there.” He started looking around the room and his eyes eventually rested upon the television set. “Does that thing still work?”

“It’s very warm in here. It could be cleaned up, but you see, we just don’t have the time,” Joan was polite about it. She then leaned on her brother.
“What are you talking about, we just don’t feel like it. The spare time we get we spend by the creek, unless it’s during the cold months. Then we spend our time in the bedroom.” Realizing that sounded worse than it was actually supposed to he corrected himself, “We play cards and junk like that. The bedroom is the warmest room in the house.”
Grabbing her forehead, Joan shook her head.
“Yeah we have secrets everywhere. Got to with the family we had.”
Joan lost her balance as her brother bent back down to look in the hole. “It’s dark, but we know our way. We know just about everything about this house.”
“Except the attic. We don’t know where the key to it is. An even if we did—“ The both shuddered slightly. They both became very quiet till Feng asked about the TV. “Yeah it works. But we need to start the generator, which needs fuel.” Jude looked down into the hole, got a giant grin, then jumped down in. “Come on. I’ll catch you.” His sister went down and he caught her by the waist then set her down. Arms wide open, he waited for Feng to join them.

He blinked as Jude had made an odd statement but he forgot about it quickly as Joan started to talk. It was a bit cool that they hadn’t explored the attic, not yet anyway. One of those keys Jude was giving him could be to the attic, but then again, he didn’t know whether they would’ve tried or not. He certainly didn’t want to upset them by asking such stupid questions. This wasn’t even his place, despite the twins telling him he was free to explore as he pleased. When Jude had gone into the hole, though, after mentioning something called a generator, he was very reluctant as he watched his sister jump in after his brother. When Jude had turned to face him and was offering to catch him, Feng was quick to shake his head and backed up slightly.
“Um, no, thanks. I think I will just look around on my own, I guess.” He forced a smile, but he was really nervous. He didn’t want to admit the truth that he was scared of the darkness within that particular hole. Usually, boys his age would be having tons of fun waltzing around out in the dark, but Feng wasn’t too similar to the others. Everyone was quite unique, and some had been forced to be like the others via pressure. He wouldn’t be forced into that darkness, no way. He stood up and started to walk for the room in the back, even if the twins could be speaking to him. He was trying to convince them that he would rather not be in the hole and be out in the open, just by doing that.

“Suit yourself. Joan and I will be back in a little. We have to get something anyway.” A smirk forced itself on his pale face. He had to get something for Feng actually. So in some ways it was better that he didn’t want to come along.
“It will only be a few minutes. We know our way around so it shouldn’t take long. Do what you like. Test out some of those keys.” Joan suggested to him in a friendly tone. She then waved at her newly acquired little brother before her and her twin disappeared into the dark.
At the edge of the hole there were shelves and under them was a semi-hidden tunnel. It was large enough that a fairly large adult to crawl through. And so this is where the twins went to. Jude, like always, went first, his sister right behind him. She was older, but he was braver. And if they ran into any spiders he would eat them.
They went on for a few feet, where there was another room like the other one, which was smaller and also could only be accessed by tunnels. The light would shine through the floorboards so they could hardly see. Jude his sister back up and she brushed the front of her dress off. They both smiled at each other, Jude picked up a tin box that had been sat in the middle of the floor, then proceeded to open it.

He shrugged in return, but smiled back at Jude, thinking entirely that the smirk was more of a smile than that, a smirk. The twins didn’t seem to mind letting him wander around on his own, and although the child was a bit frightened of his new surroundings, he was more than pleased that they didn’t question him. Joan had then suggested that he tried out some of the new keys. He had actually brought just a few with him, including the black key, and the first room that came to mind when she had suggested that was of course, the attic. “Okay.” He said calmly, trying not to be too excited.
By the time the twins had disappeared into the darkness, he had immediately turned on his heel and rushed up the stairs. He would soon reach the top where he would find the attic door. He stood there, hesitant, nervous, wondering just what could be inside. There could be a lot of things. Spiders, for one, that was mostly certain. Ghosts, perhaps. More keys, but oh, that would be so cool. He would even take a few steps in the dark just for one little tiny key. That’s how obsessed the boy would be with his collecting keys. No matter what he would just have to have this key or that key, or even better, both. Thinking about that, he was more than intent to rummage through a few keys he had put in his tight pocket, trying them all to no avail, until finally he had pulled out the black key.
He inserted it in, tried to turn it, and it clicked to the side. He grinned, his eyes widening at the success before him, and then no longer reluctant grabbed the knob and turned it to the side and then gave the door a gentle push. Of course, at first it wouldn’t budge. Three years of no use could do that to something, it would get rusty or stuck, and a window or door was more likely to get stuck like that, of course. He gave it another push, a bit harder. “C’mon…” he groaned, not happy that the door was being stubborn. One more push, but it didn’t budge at all. He would then kick at the bottom of the door, but groaned as he realized from the impact that he was barefoot, which would mean for a harmful collision. “Ouch…” He muttered under his breath as he glared at the door.
Finally, he decided he would do it, broken wrist or not. He backed up a good distance, held his good shoulder ahead of him, and then lunged forward at a quick pace, so fast that the impact should be more than enough to knock the door wide open. But unfortunately, and apparently, he hadn’t been fast enough as a loud thud echoed throughout the house when the boy collided with the door so badly that he was basically bounced back onto the floor. Dizzy, the boy sat up and shook his head quickly, and started to growl at the door, when he suddenly realized that he had managed to push the door open a bit. It was still stuck to the frame, of course, so he got up and decided to try again. This time, the second collision sent the door flying to the side as the boy tumbled forward until he was literally face to face with a skeleton’s face. “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!” Another thud would signal that the boy had fainted.

Both the twins heard the loud thump. They knew immediately that Feng went into the attic like they insisted he didn’t. They looked at each other and Jude closed the box, then grasped onto it still when they went to crawl back out. But this time they went the other way which spit them out under the front porch. They both rolled their eyes at the boy, but stayed quiet.
They ran through the living room to the stairs. Joan gulped, and Jude, still clinging on to the box, began the ascent. There it was the door. Wide open. Neither of them wanted to even come close. Joan nudged her baby brother on. So he stepped forward. And there was the boy. Right there in front of them. And all of their worst nightmares behind him.
