So, as you might have noticed, I was away the majority of this weekend because I joined my High School Speech Team on a large trip to a faraway school. I've been on this team for three years, but this is the first time I've ever participated in the Impomptu Category.
Essentially, in Impomptu, the judge will give me a topic. I have five minutes to come up with a speech of some sort about that topic. This 'speech' can be virtually anything. It can be just a few minutes speaking about the topic, or a fictional monologue, etc. Then I perform the speech. After four rounds of this, I am finished.
I was accused of cheating in the fourth round. My topic was Katy Perry. Not knowing too much about her except that she has a few hit songs, I decided to do a monologue. Basically, I was a literally crazy stalker in a mental institution and talking to the judge like she was my doctor. I told a story about how I saw Katy Perry in the mall, ran over to her, one thing leading to another and me ultimately kidnapping her, etc, etc.
The judge loved my delivery. She thought I had good facial expressions, good tone, was involved, and seemed to have a real hold on my speech. She thought I did it well. Too well. Obviously, because I didn't have long awkward pauses with a few 'uhs' and 'erm...' I memorized the speech before hand. It was vague, too, she reasoned (and it was vague. I know I deserve a lot of docked points for that!) so obviously I prepared this speech weeks in advance so that I could work in any celebrity's name because I am a criminal mastermind who also happens to have no life.
So. I was irked. I travel all the way across the state to be accused of cheating. My coach was happy, because she thought that meant I delivered the speech well. Ah. High School memories.
