Ruth hesitantly entered the Communal Home, glancing over her shoulder, half-expecting someone to leap from the shadows and scold her for trying to nap early. The sun was still in the sky, after all, and there was still work to be done. Yeah, Isaac said that they could all retire for the day and do whatever they wanted, but sometimes she misunderstood the preacher. And a scolding would, in Ruth's mind, almost certainly result in her execution.
Shivering, she looked around for Deborah who was the one who coaxed her into the risk in the first place! "Um...are you here?" the eight year old called. Deborah was younger than her, but Ruth hated to argue with anyone so the little kid had managed to get her to agree to nap time. Or lazy sloth time that would make her get beaten. "Let's not get beaten!"

"Yups!" Deborah called over to Ruth as she barged into the home. "Um...why would we get beaten?" Her eyes grew huge with fear. She had no idea she was in physical harm from sleep. Why would naps cause owies? She was even supposed to sleep during certain times of the day a few years ago when she was a younger kid. "I don't wanna get beaten."

"Oh? I don't know..." Ruth shuffled her feet. She hadn't ever really thought about that question before. "I mean, its just that beatings seem to be given out like...like..." She reeled her mind back and tried to remember something that was given out in abundance. "Like Halloween Candy used to be. On Halloween," she added unnecessarily. It wouldn't make sense if beatings were given out like Halloween Candy used to be given out in December. Unless she was trying to say beatings were unusual. And they weren't.
They were like hunters whose prey was her back. She knew that there was a beating waiting for her, and she didn't want it to capture her. "So I won't let it," she vowed out loud. Deborah was chiming an agreement. "Beatings aren't good. I'm glad you agree with me!"

"What's Halloween and candy?" Deborah asked with wonder. Big kids new so much interesting stuff. "Um...won't let what? The halloween and candy? Do halloweens and candy beat US?!!" Her eyes gr large with terror. "Beatings aren't good and neither are halloweens and candies!!!"

((ooc: Hope you two don't mind if I join in.))
Lucy skipped into the communal home, feeling very happy with herself. This new game she made would be so much fun. Not that she was bored of any of her other activities, but she did enjoy more variety.
She flopped onto her bed before she noticed the two younger girls. “Have you seen, Da- Dinah?” She asked.

OOC: I dont! The more the merrier! ;D
IC: Deborah cocked her head towards Mariam. She always smelled like she needed a bath so Deborah tried her best to avoid the older girl. But she did know Dinah. "Nopes. I didn't see her todays cause I wasa helping with the cooking." Deborah explained. "Careful! Halloweens and candys going to come and beat us if we're not careful!" Although Lucy always seemed dirty she certainly didn't deserve to be beaten by whatever candy and halloween were. Nobody deserved that.

Ruth giggled at Deborah's misunderstanding. "No, no, no," she waved the idea away. "Halloween Candy didn't beat you. But..." she cocked her head to the side. "I do remember people warning me that sometimes they were poisoned and stuck with razor blades. That never happened to me, but I guess that just shows that they really weren't very nice." And it was things like that that made her never question Isaac. Certainly she had enjoyed the candy at the time, but, thinking back, all the horrid tales she had heard about the razors ripping her stomach open and spilling her poisoned guts over the floor couldn't have just been made up. It was lucky Halloween stopped when it did, or else she may have been a victim!
Suddenly, she noticed Mariam. A big kid. And she hadn't greeted her! Heck, she might've just spoken ove her! Her eyes bulged at the idea. "Oh, hello!" she stuttered, "D-did you... Dinah?" she rapidly caught up from Deborah's rambling answer. "Um, no, I haven't seen her!" She shook her head subtly, though it was hard to notice since the rest of her body was shivering as well. In her mind, all big kids had the authority to have her killed. All of them.

Lucy didn't seem to so much as blink at Deborah's outrageous warning. She had heard crazier things from kids that were older then her. She just sighed at the girls' replies to her earlier question.
“Ruth's right about some of that. Halloween was a holiday where kids dressed up and got candy. The candy didn't have razors or poison in it. They just said that to scare people.”

"We're going to get cuts up and poisioned by candies?!!!" Deborah shouted alarmed. Here she thought the worse cady was going to do was slap their behinds but now they might draw blood and make them sick and die? This was much worse. "Why would anyone celebrate being poisoned and being cut with razors in it?" Deborah looked confused at the big kids. First she was going to get eaten by dragons and now she might be cut and killed by whatever this candy thing was supposed to be. "I think it's true! Nobody would say that just to scare us...." Deborah whimpered. Today was a terrible day.

// Sorry I took so long to reply. Life and junk. \\ "We didn't celebrate getting sick and cut with razors!" Ruth's voice rose far louder than what was polite, but the idea of celebrating that made shivers crawl down her spine and goosebumps crawl across her arms. She rolled her eyes back and tried to remember. It was sorta hard. It had been three years ago - an eternity to an eight year old. She could only vividly remember one Halloween at five years. Then she remembered. "We celebrated, um... We dressed up as scary things to scare other scary things away." She giggled a little when she finished. It had been a silly idea, and she remembered that the scary outfits had frightened her a lot. It didn't seem very productive.

OOC: No problem. I totally understand. IC: Deborah flinched at Ruth's sudden loud voice. And fliched again at the sudden and unexpected giggling. "OH! Scary things like...dragons? Can we scare away dragons by dressing up like something scarier than dragons? Like....uh..." Deborah tapped her foot in thought. What was scarier than dragons? "...um...adults? Adults are scary right?"

Ruth's jaw dropped. Deborah thought that dressing as scary things would be a good idea? Didn't she realize that the idea was crazy? It scared away scary things, but everyone was dressed as scary things scaring each other, so it was pointless. In fact, it was worse because if the scary things were afraid of the scary-costumes, than the scary costumes were very terrifying indeed. Particularly to Ruth.
"Don't do that!" she howled. Blushing and searching hastily for an explanation she added, "I mean, if you dressed as an adult, you might get offered to He Who Walks Behind the Rows by accident. And what's scarier than a dragon?"

Lucy had a hard time following Ruth and Deborah's conversation. She wasn't really interested in what they were talking about. She guessed it was probably because she was older and 'wiser'.
Bored she quickly and nonchalantly reached under her mattress and felt around the hole she'd cut in it. Almost everything seemed to be there except her filth ridden nightgown. Now she knew where Dinah was or it at least was a good guess. She was most likely at the creek cleaning the gown.

Ruth's eyes strayed after Mariam, who had snuck over to her mattress. Not sensing anything afoot, she pleaded for assistance. "T-tell Deborah that she shouldn't dress like a dragon!" She was terrified of enough things with children creating another superficial dozen.
After a pause, and a quick recollection of everything that terrorized her, she decided to ask, "And when do you think Isaac will be finished with his nap?" Her eyes bulged. The preacher had had a stressful day, and when someone had suggested that he retire for the day he had taken it. But now, well, now she was afraid someone would wake him up and make him mad. Until he woke up on his own time, Ruth wasn't about to leave the communal home and risk making any noise. Or being around anyone who would make noie.
Ruth wasn't sure if Isaac was petty enough to order someone's death for being noisy during nap-time, but she wasn't gonna risk it.

Deborah started to scratch her head in thought. What WAS scarier than He Who Walks Behind the Rows? "VEggtables are scary..." She paused to see if she got the correct answer. "But I don't want to gets eatten or sacrificed. Maybe we shoulds just naps and see what Issac does later?"
