"Wha --- ahhh!" Ruth yelped as Sonya's knee dropped into her gut. The air flew out of her, and for several seconds Ruth had trouble getting it back. As she gasped for breath she cried, "Oh. I am so...haunting...you....you jerk.... Eat me corn!" she hit one of the corn stalks. "Faster, faster I say!"

Sonya grinned at Ruth's cries of pain. "Faster? I think I like you, kid." Sonya quickly jumped back onto her feet so she could try to kick the helpless child.

"GAW!" Ruth howled as Sonya's foot dug into her side. "No, not you! I meant the corn! You shouldn't kick me at all. Stop it. I'm dying, can't you tell?"

"Uh...what? Corn don't have feet to kick you with, stupid. But if you don't want me to kick you then that's fine with me. I'll just punch you until you are dead instead." And Sonya proceeded to try to punch the kid. "I'm much faster than corn anyways."

Sonya was succeeding in her job, admittedly. She had been wise to conclude that Isaac wanted Ruth disciplined. But then, even stopped clock was correct twice a day. He wouldn't place too much hope on her reemergence to sanity.
But despite Sonya's punishment, Ruth still insisted that the corn was eating her. Since He Who Walks Behind the Rows surely would have alerted his seer if he was going to devour one of the youngest children, and since Ruth would have given up this folly if it was just pretend, Isaac could only conclude that the girl was indeed, delusional.
"Sonya, lift Ruth from the corn," Isaac ordered. "She will be easier to deal with once she is away from the source of her turmoil."

Ruth snorted and rolled her eyes at Isaac's order. "She can try," she vowed. "But it won't work." She glanced behind her, staring blankly at her legs which were still blanketed in dirt. "I'm half-eaten already."

Sonya sighed with exaggerated enthusiasm. "Oh sure you're shortness. Just when I was starting to have fun too..." She tried to pull Ruth up by her arm.

And, surprisingly (to Ruth) but predictably to anyone who wasn't, the corn released its captive and the eight year old dangled in the air off of Sonya's arm.
She blinked.
"It's...it's a miracle! Thank you, Sonya!" she tried to inch her way across Sonya's arm towards her shoulder so that she could give her savior a hug.

Isaac watched Ruth's rejoicing with a cold detachment, allowing her a brief moment of rapture before he launched her into hell.
"It is not a miracle," he pointed out drily, locking his hands behind his back. "It is wrong to declare such things as the Lord's Divine Intervention, and cite him as an author for something so crude. Crude," he repeated, "and mad. Are you mad, Ruth? Did you honestly believe that our livelihood would betray us and devour you? Or are you simply disobedient?"

Sonya was about to sucker punch Ruth who by attempting to what looked like hug her had left her stomach open when she heard Isaac. Instead she returned the hug and attempted to drop her back on the ground. She turned her head to Isaac in disgust. "Dude. You suck. Like if the Lord can't take ownership of stupid likes like not being eaten by corn then how can he take credit for like the sun not exploding and killing us too?" Sonya snarled to cover up how confused herself about the whole matter. "Stop sucking and being all confusing. Cause like am I supposed to punch her more now? Or go punch that other little kid? Both? Should I punch you for being confusing and stuff? This is going to get boring again isn't it?"

Ruth shrank away from Isaac, and tried to grab onto the protective skirts of Sonya (who was talking about beating her, but maybe she'd be more reluctant if Ruth acted like she trusted and needed her. It could work? Cutness?) . "I, um...I thought I was being eaten..." she mumbled, shuffling her feet. She was regretting her devil-may-care attitude now. Beatings were in the air.
"I'm sorry Isaac...but..."

Isaac leaned towards Ruth and cocked his head to the side, as though pondering her apology with utmost sincerity. "But...but what? You thought you were being eaten, and thus freed from any restraints you chose to indulge yourself in sin? At the time when you believed you were free from discipline, you chose to mock all that you know to be true? Are you trying to say that your belief and regard for He Who Walks Behind the Rows only stems from your fear of flogging? Oh," he looked towards Sonya, and almost as an afterthought added, "and don't beat me."

Ruth shuddered. Isaac sure hit the nail on the head. But she couldn't admit to that.
"Um....no," she said simply. She refused to offer any explanation. She looked towards Sonya, hoping that the warrior would give her an encore in her defense. Her cuteness had started to work on her, she knew it.

Sonya sighed heavily. So yes everything was going to get all boring and junk. She wasn't paying too much attention to the whole thing. Apparently the jerk didn't want her to punch him. Bah. The boy wasn't any fun. Good thing she divorced him. She was applauding herself for dumping the preacher when she noticed Ruth staring up at her.
"Eh? Is it beating time again?" She asked with glee. "I like you kid. You seem to love beatings." She grinned. Why else would she stand so close to her if she didn't want Sonya to ram her fists into her face? "Issac you done being stupid and confusing and junk now? No one understands what you want anyway...So can I get to beating her again? ...Or are we punishing her by not beating her senseless cause she totally loves beatings and knocked that other kid around instead?"

"Wha? Whoa....!" Ruth stumbled away from Sonya. Her cuteness had backfired! Now Sonya liked her and thought she liked beatings, and would try to make her happy with beatings. What to do? If she liked beatings she'd get one as a reward, if she didn't like them she'd get them as a punishment.
"This isn't fair!" she growled. "If I'm going to be beaten, I should get a running start....and I shouldn't get a beating."
